2020 REPORT
This year, we have designed a series of reports for Dawlaty and WILPF in both Arabic and English. Those published so far are Turning the tide: Syrian women’s rights organizations on the transitional justice map (Arabic/English), and Sexual Violence by Force of Arms Against Women in Syria (Arabic/English).
To publicise the sexual violence report, we also made a 90 second animated video (Arabic/English) and a range of illustrated social media graphics.
We completed a twelve page comic strip on the Ghouta siege to be published in the Slow Death Zero anthology, available in January 2021. Based on original witness testimony, the story is titled A Garden in Ghouta, and shows the lengths the Assad regime went to in the years of siege to deny the possibility of life outside regime control.
We have also just completed another 90 second animated film for Dawlaty’s Syrian Oral History Archive, further developing our abilities in 2D animation.
Publishing of Syria Notes paused this year, but behind the scenes we have been busy. With the help of seed funding from Amnesty International UK, we have been developing a new Syria Notes project focusing on issues of justice and accountability. The first fruits of this work will appear in Spring 2021.
With partial funding from Lush Charity Pot, we have been developing a women’s citizen journalism project. The pandemic has been an obstacle to our plans, but we also expect to bring this project to fruition in 2021.
We have also been pleased to complete other work this year for Amnesty International UK, Islamic Relief UK, and the Syrian British Council. Our final graphic design work for the year was on the Arabic edition of a report published by International Media Support on Syrian independent exile media.
